Overview
Lawyers are often good talkers – but this is not the same thing as being an effective communicator. This course is designed to hone your communication skills to maximise your impact and effectiveness.
Communication is an art rather than a science, and effective communication skills are essential to the practice of law. Lawyers spend a significant proportion of each day communicating with others – such as clients, colleagues, opponents and the courts. Given the amount of time we spend communicating, it is crucial that we always aim to do this for maximum impact and effectiveness.
This course will help you to refine your communication skills to maximise your impact and effectiveness. In this course, we will explore:
- what effective communication looks like;
- how communication underpins your success in practice; and
- the seven key traits of effective communicators.
We will also cover practical examples of how to communicate more effectively, as well as common pitfalls lawyers can often fall into when communicating – and how to avoid these.

Helpful reminders of effective communication skills!The course was easy to follow and sets out the 7 traits of highly effective communicators. A good reminder on the power of words (but also the elements of tone and body language in our communication - given words are only 7%). I liked the phrase 'Act As If' rather than 'Fake it until you make it' to help create a positive physiological feedback loop and build confidence.
